NBC’s Community starts off on developing a negatively filmed image [they're the long-lasting ones] to picture Aspergers as being, “A serious disorder“.
When I first published this post, I had a video clip¹ to include with Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) saying to Abed (Danny Pudi), “Well, you have Aspergers.”
Aspergers is who we are; not what we have. Combining the two statements I quoted from the video clip, that would be like me telling you (assuming you are a NT),
You are a serious disorder.
Humor often times is the route to desensitizing society towards thoughtless behavior. Does this mean it’s now socially acceptable to poke fun at anyone of a different culture/race/gender? I agree with what is said down at the bottom of Verzen’s post,
I implore the show to rethink their position in having this joke within the show as it shows bad taste.
It would be the exact same if I created a show and just started spouting off racist or sexist jokes. We are born with Aspergers, just like others who are born with a different color or sex.
Here’s a sneak preview of what’s ahead thanks to NBC’s desire to satisfy what’s socially popular while simultaneously enhancing it:

The premier episode of NBC’s Community airs tonight on NBC at 9:30 EST time. This show will continue on Thursdays and changes to 8 pm on October 8th.
This kind of stuff is related to what I said earlier today in my post entitled Totally Uncaring.
¹The user of the account where the video was hosted has since removed it.
Postscript added on 3.5.10 — I’ve probably missed seeing more than half the episodes since Community began to air on NBC, but as of this past Thursday, it appears I was being over-judgmental too soon. I’m glad to see that the main character Abed is being portrayed accurately as an Aspie and is being presented in a positive light.
