Another Aspergers Documentary

  • Posted on November 4, 2009

This three part video documentary is about a 14 year old Aspie boy named Reuben Walsh. As good as it portrays an example of Aspergers, what should always be keep in mind is that there are other vital factors which affect the way Aspies differ from one another.

Reuben wants to remain true to his unique self, but without being so aliened from everyone else.

You may notice (like when he is clothes shopping in Part 3) that he appears to be a potentially good example of the type of person Kazimierz Dabrowski describes in his Theory of Positive Disintegration. If you’re not up to reading what Dabrowski’s theory is about and/or can’t understand it, it means Reuben could probably experience greater mental health than what most people could possibly ever know.¹

Reuben’s Crazy Life – Part 2

Reuben’s Crazy Life – Part 3

¹I wonder if David Weeks heard of Kazimierz Dabrowski’s Theory of Positive Disintegration? Dr. Weeks, along with Jamie James, have done studies on eccentrics and (to my knowledge) have not mentioned Aspergers, but what is pointed out in an interview with Dr. Weeks is that eccentrics live longer, are happier and are odd.

Generally speaking, Aspies probably have the greatest potential for this if they avoid the ‘robotic, dehumanizing (and de-individualizing) role of the social environment’ and instead aim for a ‘higher autonomous and stable ideal self’. To achieve this at its highest level is to maximize one’s true personality.

I know from experience what trials and tribulations one must face to go that route, but I can’t image traveling it without Christ.

The choice is conform to the world or be transformed into God’s ideal you.

Postscript — Edits might be made on this post in the future, after I’m less sleep deprived, if improvements appear necessary. I can think of some things to expound upon in this set of videos, but rather than ‘mess up’ this post, I might create another post for those nuggets of information.

A Tribute to Katie Miller

  • Posted on September 20, 2009

Katie can do things in a top of line manner and she’s an Aspie! I feel fortunate to have had the pleasure to talk with her personally, so I can say that what I’ve included of her in this post is as it appears.

Katie as an advocate for Aspergers/Autism:

Autistic self-advocate Katie Miller speaks at the IACC May 4, 2009 ↓

At section 4:43 ↑ Katie points out that language matters. Autism is not an illness.

In Katie Miller’s IACC Testimony delivered on March 14, 2007, you can read Katie’s words about Alison Tepper Singer (a neurotypical, a representative on the IACC, and the Executive Vice President of Autism Speaks).

I, Sheila, ask,

How many people know about Ms. Singer wanting to murder her own autistic daughter, Jodi?

Katie points out (in the above linked testimony), “Ms. Singer states on camera that she did not drive off the George Washington Bridge with Jodi in the car only because of the fact that she has another child. While the statement itself is derogatory, the most troubling aspect of the incident is that Jodi is playing in the background.”

Katie as an Artist: Katie Miller’s Website Her resume is as impressive as her artwork.

Katie Miller as a comic actress: Diet Mountain Dew commercial ↓

She’s Sniffing Bananas (Mountain Dew)
The video is over when you see ↑ How Dew Does Diet.

Most Aspies are like Katie Miller in that we don’t engage in one-sided conversations (as mistakenly claimed about Asperger people) and we also have a great sense of humor.

Postscript added on 9.29.9 — The videos of Katie Miller at United Nations World Autism Day and Katie talks to parents of people with Asperger’s are no longer available by YouTube due to unknown reasons.

At section 2:28, the (now deleted) video of Katie Miller at United Nations World Autism Day, Valarie Paradiz (another woman on the autism spectrum who lives down the road from me) said, “I would love to see individuals on the spectrum, in as much as it is possible for us, to participate at every level of planning and development so that we can truly address the issue of human rights and discrimination.” ← I agree Valarie!

Football to an Aspie

  • Posted on August 13, 2009

Last night was the first time I ever saw anything like this one minute video clip from the 2nd episode of the 3rd series for the IT Crowd involving football. Its the absolute best portrayal of how I’d be at a football game too (along with many other popular neurotypical social functions)!

Since my best friend (an Aspie guy in the U.K.) linked me to this YouTube video, it has me wonder what percentage of Aspies think and feel the same way as Moss (and those like me) about such things as football games.

I’m sure this same level of distaste for football isn’t limited to (God only knows how many) Aspies. There are some neurotypicals who probably share these same thoughts about football. However, I doubt NTs would say they’d rather be weird than act like everyone else (especially since they generally are ‘pack’ creatures who crave to fit in with some clique and are terrified of traveling through life solo). I also should add that there probably are some Aspies who love watching sports like football (I’m not personally aware of any yet).

Richard Ayoade plays the character Maurice Moss. By just viewing this one minute clip, along with reading Wikipedia’s brief description of Moss’s character, that I’d have to agree Moss is an Aspie. He is described as being highly intelligent, lacks¹ social skills, is a “standard nerd” who struggles to communicate with anything that doesn’t have a keyboard, and lives at home with his mother, who also dresses him².

In case if viewers of this clip can’t comprehend the fact that there are many people with higher levels of intelligence who simply are too smart to surrender a vital part of who they are simply to accommodate those who don’t get why others are different, then I guess its something Aspies are going to have to vigorously attempt to educate society about. If this statement sounds arrogant, then I must be unintelligent because I cannot think of any other way to say what NEEDS to be said.

I’m thankful for my friend introducing me to some more British humor! In my opinion, it’s the best!… along with ‘having’ weird and a sweet style! This little ‘football’ clip is a keeper for me. It will always lift my spirits!

Postscript — This too from Wikipedia that shouts absurdity and discrimination:

Despite the company’s dependence on their services, they [Moss and Roy] are despised, ignored, and considered losers by the rest of the staff.

Parents be aware of the probable package that comes with being eager to have a genius child. You might think it would make you proud, but in reality, most likely your child shall suffer life being despised, ignored, and considered a loser. Monk types are another example.

There is a huge difference between being able to regurgitate massive amounts of information stored in memory (knowledge gained by education) versus being able to create (generate) novel³ thoughts.

¹To say he ‘lacks’ social skills is a misleading description, because that’s merely popular opinion and relative. If Moss was in an Aspie culture, his social skills would be wonderful. Any neurotypical in an Aspie culture would be the one sorely lacking social skills.

²Most Aspies can dress themselves just fine without anyone else’s help.

³Novel as in new or unusual in an interesting way.

Heather Kuzmich

Two videos of Heather Kuzmich, for those who have a wrong impression about Aspergers:

Heather talks and is talked about. ↓

Heather – all music; no dialogue. ↓

Heather Kuzmich reveals during her interview with Alex Plank that she is able to figure out who else is an Aspie. That goes to show, “It takes one to know one.”

Love the Hub!

  • Posted on March 28, 2008

What hub am I talking about? The Autism Hub! It would be a glorious day if I ever got to see the Autism Hub speak internationally; on television and in world-wide publications! The world can’t even begin to imagine the impact that autistic members on the hub could inject!

I can imagine it now . . . people would be saying, “What’s all the hubbub about?” Any creative ideas and/or suggestions fellow hubbers on how our spokes can reach more folks?

My suggestion is we start rolling around this planet in whatever ways we can draw attention. We need more than t-shirts and the internet; we need big businesses on our side. Fight fire with fire and let the burning wheel turn on the light for those being led into the dark! I bet if we pooled our individual assets together (besides all the great reading material we create), we too could move boldly forward like ‘Autism Speaks’ Not.

United we stand — divided we fall. Let’s not just stand our ground on what we believe or merely walk for autism; let’s run for autism! As in “Run, Forrest, Run” (as vigorously said in the Forrest Gump movie) . . . let’s hear “Run, Hub, Run!” Make it sound so fun that all children would want a ‘hub’ toy to play with. Let McDonalds and Burger King put that in their Happy Meal! . . . but first Hollywood needs to get going on making movies depicting characters on the autism spectrum as being fun to know. Hey Alex, do you think you could get Yellow Sneakers¹ to run that way? Maybe then businesses targeting children like Toys ‘R Us and Build-A-Bear Workshop would maybe get a little nervous.

Children have a sense of what’s crap versus what’s real, let them be our campaign managers. People can’t make a decision unless they’re reminded of there being two sides to a puzzle; one side hides the picture, while the other exposes it.

We need to be putting a face to autism that others are not seeing.

¹Yellow Sneaker Media and WrongPlanet.net (the world’s largest online resource and community for those with Asperger’s Syndrome) are founded by Alex Plank. Here is a video of Alex Plank (an Aspie) talking to parents of children with Aspergers. ↓

Asperger’s Syndrome Video

Since the original time this post was published, all the videos except for one were deleted off YouTube. The only one left is:

David’s Documentary about Aspergers ↓

The best video was removed from youtube. It had clips from the movie Napoleon Dynamite that emphasized Aspie traits in a hilarious way!
